Description
This study examines stress, coping strategies and teacher burnout in 245 Francophone student teachers in the primary and secondary teacher education program at the University of Ottawa. I had two objectives: (1) to establish the psychometric characteristics of the French translations of three tests, the Teacher Stress Inventory (TSI), the Brief COPE, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI); and (2) to determine to what extent the student teachers were stressed and burned out, the principal sources of this, and the most frequently used coping strategies according to age, professional experience and teaching level (primary/secondary). An initial structural equation modelling (SEM) confirmed the TSI structure. Respondents' scores suggested that student teachers were not unduly stressed, and were therefore at a lower risk of burnout. A second SEM included measurements from the MBI and revealed that coping strategies act as mediators in the relationship between stress and teacher burnout. Key words: student teachers, stress, coping strategies, coping, teacher burnout
